  • What are the benefits of the Kickstart scheme to businesses and to young people?

UK Hospitality

Why now?

At it’s 2019 peak UK Hospitality employed 3.2 million people, now with the advent of the pandemic we could be seeing a potential 1.2 million job losses (UK Hospitality).

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has recognised that, “We know young people have been some of the hardest hit by the pandemic and unemployment can have long standing implications for their future jobs and wages.” (LinkedIn, Nov 10th 2020).

There has been a 42% increase in the unemployment rate and a 120% increase for those going onto unemployment benefits/universal credit for 16-24-year-olds, from Dec 19 to Sep 20 (House of Commons Library, Nov 10th 2020).

Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism has helped before (employing 1 in 6 after the 2008 market crash, says UK Hospitality) and can again by crafting partnerships with young people to show off the range of skills that can be grown in these industries.

Kickstart presents an opportunity for businesses to invest in their future, by bringing their current/future consumers inside the industry to create a valuable pipeline of talent (Scottish
 Tourism Alliance).
